Export Food Info — Issue 35

Oct 2 - Oct 8, 2026 · Published Thursday, October 8, 2026 · English Edition

Global food cost pressure is shifting from expectation trading to real-world shock: Black Sea shipping lanes disrupted, raw sugar at a 19-month high, and crude oil approaching USD 100 - all while the Chinese yuan keeps strengthening. If you source food products from China, here is what matters for your next purchase order. Data window Sep 29 - Oct 8; unified close Oct 7.

This Week at a Glance

  • Black Sea lanes disrupted: drone strikes hit vessels in Romanian and Bulgarian EEZs - one corn carrier sank.
  • Raw sugar at a 19-month high (20.82¢/lb); global deficit revised up to 3.5-4.5 million tonnes.
  • Crude approaching USD 100 (WTI 90.25 / Brent 101.51) - the silent multiplier from fertilizer to sterilization.
  • Yuan keeps strengthening (USD/CNY 6.7050, about 5.8% YTD) - USD quotes face structural upward pressure.
  • Buyer-favorable windows remain: pork at cycle bottom, eggs, garlic stocks and dairy ingredients cheap.

1Freight & Geopolitics

Freight: Don't Be Fooled by the Falling BDI

  • On Oct 5-6, commercial vessels were struck by drones in the EEZs of Romania and Bulgaria - the first time attacks expanded across two NATO members' EEZs within 24 hours. One cargo ship carrying Ukrainian corn sank.
  • London insurance markets have pushed Black Sea war-risk premiums into prohibitive territory. Multiple shipowners have suspended tonnage to Danube ports.
  • Roughly 25-30% of global wheat trade moves through the Black Sea. The IGC estimates the disruption could remove 15-20 million tonnes per year from seaborne wheat trade.
What it means for you

Non-Black-Sea routes (e.g., US Gulf to China) may see 5-10% relief from the weaker BDI, but container all-in rates including BAF are up 3-5% month-on-month. Budget a 15-25% premium on any Black Sea-related routing.

2Currency

The Yuan Keeps Strengthening

USD/CNY onshore spot at 6.7050 - a structural shift for export pricing. The yuan has appreciated roughly 5.8% year-to-date (from about 7.12 last October); offshore at 6.7122, with the dollar index near 101.9.

Market consensus for Q4: a core range of 6.65-6.75, with faster appreciation toward year-end.

What it means for you

Chinese export quotes denominated in USD face structural upward pressure. Buyers planning Q4-Q1 orders may benefit from confirming contracts earlier rather than later - each 0.10 move in USD/CNY meaningfully shifts FOB pricing.

3Sugar

19-Month High - Direct Impact on Canned Fruit & Sauces

ICE raw sugar at 20.82 cents/lb - and the deficit story is still deepening. USDA FAS slashed India's 2026/27 production estimate by 12.3% to 29.5 million tonnes; ending stocks cut 38.5% to 4 million tonnes. India - the world's No.2 producer - may flip from exporter to net importer.

Brazil's center-south output may fall below 38 million tonnes on rain-disrupted crushing. German beet sugar is projected down 25.3%; the EU as a whole down 17%. Our 2026/27 global deficit estimate has been revised up to 3.5-4.5 million tonnes.

What it means for you

Sugar is a core input for canned fruit, sauces and beverages. In China, domestic sugar (about 5,180 RMB/t) is temporarily shielded by out-of-quota tariffs, but the new crushing season starts in November. For a standard 425g canned yellow peach (60g sugar), sugar cost per can could rise about 6.5% if domestic prices reach 5,500 RMB/t. If you buy canned fruit in syrup or juice, Q4 is the window to lock prices before new-season sugar costs feed through.

4Energy

Oil Near USD 100 - The Silent Cost Multiplier

WTI 90.25 · Brent 101.51 (Oct 7 intraday). EIA raised its 2026 WTI forecast to 88.21 (+4.2%) and 2027 to 79.74 USD/bbl (+14.3%). Gulf of Mexico hurricane risk (threatening about 15% of US output), Houthi attacks on Saudi airports, and a 2.09-million-barrel API inventory draw keep supply tight.

The transmission chain: crude - fertilizer & farm costs - freight surcharges - biodiesel demand - vegetable-oil floor prices - sterilization energy costs for canned food. PET packaging material is already up 5.52% month-on-month.

5Cost Window

Where Buyers Still Have Leverage

Not everything is going up. Several China-sourced categories currently offer favorable economics - cost-favorable categories for importers, week of Oct 7.

6Logistics

China's Food Logistics Are Getting Faster and Cheaper

  • China-Laos Railway cold-chain express: Bangkok to Kunming in 26 hours, cutting transport costs by about 50% with near-zero spoilage.
  • Pinglu Canal (opened Sep 16): expected to reduce ASEAN-China fruit logistics costs by another 30%.
  • Pingxiang smart customs: 15-second clearance; 48 hours to the Pearl River Delta.
  • ASEAN fruit imports through Guangxi reached 1.73 million tonnes (+6.8%) worth RMB 26 billion (+19.2%) in Jan-Jul 2026 - cross-border food trade infrastructure is maturing fast.

7Action

Action Checklist for Importers

  • Lock canned-fruit and sauce prices in Q4 - sugar cost pass-through is coming with the November crushing season.
  • Move Q1 orders forward if possible - yuan appreciation raises USD quotes over time.
  • Pork-based products: buy the bottom - but secure forward cover into mid-2027.
  • Watch the Oct 10 USDA WASDE - the most important supply-demand update of this cycle; a downward revision could trigger another grain rally.
  • Add war-risk premium clauses to any Black Sea-adjacent shipping arrangements.

8Watch List
